It has not been an easy time for me, materially. My unemployment benefits ran out at the same time as my roommate was forced to give notice in order to accept a new job on Vancouver Island. With no work in sight, I am having to get myself a storage locker and return to an itinerant life, at least for a couple of months. I have survived this before, in 2000-01, 2011-12 and 2024; and so I am not fearful, just a little disappointed by the latest turn of events.

Naturally, this sapped my productivity a bit. But thanks to excellent counsel from Christian friends, especially my friends Russ and Sydney, and my pastor, Jory, I chose to approach this turn of fate differently than I have in the past. I chose to trust in God and pray for guidance. The result is not a new home or a job but a new project, of which I am very proud, the culmination of half a decade of soul searching, both before and since my conversion. As the great Stlatlimx Chief, Ruby Dunstan observed, in tough times, no good comes of pursuing what you believe yourself to be owed; instead, we must change our optic and ask ourselves what we owe to others.

To better explain the new project, I have un-paywalled chapter twenty of my memoirs, The Soft Purges to provide some historical context for a new group I am launching, The Walafrid Strabo Conservation Society. In the coming months, I’ll be starting up a new course archive for the teaching work I’m doing for my new intellectual home, the George Gibault Institute. But, in the meantime, please enjoy my substantial back catalogue, the entirety of which, including some one-off lectures, is available here.

As some of you may know, I left my long-term intellectual home, Los Altos Institute last fall, leaving it in the capable hands of Jonathan Sheps, my long-suffering treasurer, a polymath geneticist.

I have chosen to move on to the George Gibault Institute, named in honour of my long-time friend George, who passed away a decade ago. As I said at his memorial, George was, for me, half-role model, half-cautionary tale. I wish he, the Director of Social Credit Caucus Research 1975-94, could have seen me during my half-year stint as a research officer for the BC Conservative Party. My ex had always warned me, “If you’re not careful, when you’re fifty, you’ll be George.”

The Stuart Parker Christmas Catalogue

I am also going to be teaching a course via Zoom on Wednesday nights this fall on a phenomenon I call Neo-Spenglerism. Because the Nazis used Oswald Spengler’s Decline of the West as a major justifying theory for their regime, Spengler’s thinking languished in relative obscurity until the 1993 publication of Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations. It is this thinking, I argue, that forms the ideological foundation of the New Right/Bannonite parties that have rapidly gained support since 2014 like Reform UK, Alternative for Germany and our very own One BC. Agree or disagree with it, it is important that we understand the philosophical underpinning of one of the fastest growing political movements in the world.
